When the temps drop during the winter hunting months in Arkansas, a cup of hot coffee, a warm stove and a comfortable recliner all sound pretty tempting. But, as we all know, big bucks and flying ducks aren’t taken while sitting in the living room. You have to be ready to hit the field in even the toughest conditions. After all, surviving the elements comfortably all starts with choosing the appropriate clothing for the conditions.

Because November through February in Arkansas brings such a varying array of weather — from cool 40 degree days to icy teen temperature mornings — nothing is more important than apparel that can handle a wide-range of extreme winter weather conditions. From insulated boots to lined-gloves and thermal headwear, lacking adequate attire can ruin a day of hunting all-together.

At the center of the winter weather wardrobe is, of course, the jacket. If you’re unable to keep you’re core warm and insulated, you can bet it won’t take long until you’re miserable and headed back to the house.

Whether bow hunting for late season bucks or wading in hip-high flooded timber for diving ducks, much emphasis needs to be put on finding apparel that is warm enough, and durable enough, to get you through the coldest temperatures of the season.

Last year our good friends at Killer Kallz sent us a few calls for promotion. At the time, I thought the duck calls I received were the best duck calls I had ever had the chance to hunt with. Well, I was wrong. I spoke with Jay down in Stuttgart last week and they have a new call series out called “The Southern Breeze.” I had him slide a single reed tone board in the call, and immediately, I knew I had found the best duck call I have ever heard.

I have owned several calls, from double reeds to singles, and from wooden to plastic to acrylic, I even have my other Killer Kallz on my lanyard, but this call will down right get nasty. From the very dirty comeback calls, right into a feed chuckle, to a double cluck, and on to a nasally quack, this call handles it all … and in sub freezing temperatures too. Oh by the way, just like the other Killer Kallz they make, it simply won’t stick. To top it off, at a mere 60 bucks, this call is absolutely perfect gift for any duck hunter in your family. It comes in a single or double reed, your choice.

Here is a bit of info from the Killer Kallz website about “The Southern Breeze”

…The Southern Breeze series calls will produce the loud ringing hail call down to the nasty whining whisper to set those ducks right down into the decoys…and with very little air…

As the saying goes, the proof is in the pudding. Check out our Arkansas Duck Hunting Photos to see the evidence.

It wasn’t so long ago that the only hunts you’d ever see filmed were on your favorite Sunday morning hunting show.

My how things have changed.

Thanks to the introduction of more compact and affordable home video equipment for the everyday Joe, and the ever-growing use of websites like YouTube which allow sportsmen to share their video hunting experiences online, the practice of filming wildlife hunts has exploded in popularity.

Today, tons of video camera accessories for compound bows have flooded the hunting market. Some tiny digital cameras made specifically for bows have started to creep onto shelves too. However, unless you like poor sound quality and grainy video, the most practical innovation is still in the form of bow camera mounts.

But that doesn’t mean there isn’t room for improvement. Most mounts I’ve used for my compound bow are so heavy and bulky, it is distracting when aiming at a target, not to mention hard to hold a tight shot — even with a small, light weight camera attached.

However, there is a new bow camera mount on the market and it’s one of the best designs I’ve seen so far. It’s called the BowCamTreeCam, and it offers several advantages over other bow camera mounts.

Come inside the Arkansas Hunting Forum for the full BowCamTreeCam review.

Alot of our visitors have asked, “What kind of choke do I need to use for turkey hunting in Arkansas?”. Well we will clear the air and give first hand experience on the choke, shells, and gun we will be using this year. Our good friends at killer kallz also make some of the best chokes on the market, more specifically designed to shoot today’s modern heavy turkey loads.

Angle Porting is the name of the company, and they have been making chokes a lot longer than duck calls. We could discuss several more products they offer but for the sake of information we will stick to the Extreme Range Turkey Choke. I took several pictures while patterning this turkey choke, gun, and shells, but unfortunately I dropped the camera in the bar ditch right after I was done.

The gun I am using is a Remington 887 waterfowl edition, with 26 inch barrel, the Extreme Range Turkey Choke from Angle Porting, and the Federal Premium Mag Shok Hi Velocity Flitecontrol Turkey Loads, because as one review about the shells put it: “it kills everything: DEAD”.

Tests were done a couple weeks ago, temp was about 60 degrees, a light breeze out of the south at 2-3 mph, and it was 8:00 in the morning. We tried to keep it similar to a hunting situation except we were on a levee in a rice field. We patterned at 30, 40, and 50 yards, with only the 887 and the Fed Premium shells.
