Nightscape Outdoor Photography Tips

February 2nd, 2011

I’ve been very fortunate the last few years to have the opportunity to spend several days hiking through the woods with some of the best nature photographers in the state. I know that sounds like fun, and it is, I must admit.  Along with the good times and fantastic photos comes a very hectic schedule and much hard work that wears you down in a hurry.  Getting up early, hiking in the dark to reach the raging waters spilling over the bluffs, or the sunrise peaking over the mountaintops — shooting sunsets and wildlife will have you wondering through the woods well after dark.

I have recently noticed a big flaw with my scheduling.  By leaving camp an hour or so before sunrise and returning usually an hour or so after sunset, I’ve missed out on some great photography adventures.  Nightscape photography is something I’ve started trying to do more often.  The moon and a timed exposure can bring out enough light to produce photographs with many different outcomes.

It’s easy to use the darkness as a tool. Come inside the Arkansas hunting and fishing forum to find out how.

Arkansan Bags Kentucky State Record Turkey

January 19th, 2011

ArkansasOutdoorsOnline.com member Mike Poor harvested the Kentucky state record turkey for archery in Livingston, KY on December 18, 2010. The monster Eastern A-Typical wild turkey scored 109.1875 and featured four beards with a total length of 34.0625 inches, the longest beard equaling 11.5 inches. The turkey’s spurs were 1 inch long, and it weighed in at  just over 20 pounds.

Columbia Omni Heat Wader Widgeon Jacket Review

January 2nd, 2011

When the temps drop during the winter hunting months in Arkansas, a cup of hot coffee, a warm stove and a comfortable recliner all sound pretty tempting. But, as we all know, big bucks and flying ducks aren’t taken while sitting in the living room. You have to be ready to hit the field in even the toughest conditions. After all, surviving the elements comfortably all starts with choosing the appropriate clothing for the conditions.

Because November through February in Arkansas brings such a varying array of weather — from cool 40 degree days to icy teen temperature mornings — nothing is more important than apparel that can handle a wide-range of extreme winter weather conditions. From insulated boots to lined-gloves and thermal headwear, lacking adequate attire can ruin a day of hunting all-together.

At the center of the winter weather wardrobe is, of course, the jacket. If you’re unable to keep you’re core warm and insulated, you can bet it won’t take long until you’re miserable and headed back to the house.

Whether bow hunting for late season bucks or wading in hip-high flooded timber for diving ducks, much emphasis needs to be put on finding apparel that is warm enough, and durable enough, to get you through the coldest temperatures of the season.

1 onion, diced
1 stick celery, diced
6 oz red wine
6 oz chicken stock

  • –Place duck into heated oil and lightly brown all sides.
  • –Add the diced onions, carrots and celery to the pan.
  • –Place pan into oven for anywhere from 10-25 minutes. This will depend on the size of the breast and how much you browned it in the previous step.
  • –Spoon excess fat from the pan (there may not be much), leaving the chopped vegetables in the pan, and add the red wine. Boil until reduced by two thirds.
  • –Add the stock and reduce again by two thirds. Taste and check the seasoning, then strain into serving jug.
  • –Carve the breast and use extra juice to cover.

Recipe is great served with rice and potatoes!

The Best Duck Call, Killer Kallz’s The Southern Breeze Series

December 2nd, 2010

Last year our good friends at Killer Kallz sent us a few calls for promotion. At the time, I thought the duck calls I received were the best duck calls I had ever had the chance to hunt with. Well, I was wrong. I spoke with Jay down in Stuttgart last week and they have a new call series out called “The Southern Breeze.” I had him slide a single reed tone board in the call, and immediately, I knew I had found the best duck call I have ever heard.

I have owned several calls, from double reeds to singles, and from wooden to plastic to acrylic, I even have my other Killer Kallz on my lanyard, but this call will down right get nasty. From the very dirty comeback calls, right into a feed chuckle, to a double cluck, and on to a nasally quack, this call handles it all … and in sub freezing temperatures too. Oh by the way, just like the other Killer Kallz they make, it  simply won’t stick. To top it off, at a mere 60 bucks, this call is absolutely perfect gift for any duck hunter in your family. It comes in a single or double reed, your choice.

Here is a bit of info from the Killer Kallz website about “The Southern Breeze”

…The Southern Breeze series calls will produce the loud ringing hail call down to the nasty whining whisper to set those ducks right down into the decoys…and with very little air…

As the saying goes, the proof is in the pudding. Check out our Arkansas Duck Hunting Photos to see the evidence. Join us in the Arkansas Duck Hunting Forum for a couple of other big announcements.

For hunters and fishermen, rising before the morning sun reaches the horizon is nothing out of the ordinary. The breaking dawn pursuit of monster bucks; the chillymornings calling in diving ducks; the early July morning casts for hungry largemouths — it’s what we as sportsmen live for.

But once a year, a day comes along where we rise and shine early not for the woods, but for a land much more unfamiliar than even the murkiest lake cove or thickest hidden holler. It’s called Black Friday, and it’s THE best time  to get your hands on the most discounted hunting and fishing gear of the year — and the only time to actually have an excuse for holding your wife’s purse.
