I was driving home yesterday afternoon and a coyote came trotting out onto the side of the road. He was walking on three legs and looked like he had a big gash just back from his front shoulder. I'm not sure if it was from a predator or from a gun shot, but he also had blood all over his face and back. Honestly was almost more red than brown.

Question is, if it wasn't from a gun shot what do you think it was from. What are the main predators for coyotes? We don't have wolves, only up around Yellowstone, and only other thing I can think of is maybe a mountain lion or cougar.

Sounds like he got tumbled under a car to me or fell off a cliff.

Yeah, I thought about another car too, but the direction he was coming, he would have had to travel a long ass way to the nearest road behind him, unless he circled back or something to this same road.

Being that this was Sunday afternoon, I'm almost wondering if he was in fact shot. There is a lot of hunting that goes on right here by my house because it is public land. I've seen this coyote around a lot (or I'm assuming it's the same one), several times over the last few weeks, so it's not secret he hangs around here. Also, where that biggest bloodshed was located, it would have been an ideal shot. Then again, hitting him in that spot would have surely killed him.

Will be interested to see if I ever see him again. My guess is, from his looks, he didn't make it very far before he laid down and died.
