Last year was my first year bow hunting from a stand. It wasn't high, but this year I moved it so it is about 18' up. I have a problem with heights so the first the I did was go out and buy a vest type harness. I am a single dad, and am not taking chances with getting myself hurt.

18 up is pretty damn good distance, especially for a beginner. I usually start getting nervous about 15, and with my climber stop short of 20 nearly always.

We used a 20' climbing stick ladder, and the hang on stand is almost to the top. The first time I started up, I made it about halfway and came down and went and got a vest harness with a linesmans strap. Now I am a lot more comfortable getting to the top. Haven't had the chance to shoot from it yet.

Hey man, sorry to hear about your loss. My condolences.
My friend and I just bought climbing stands and they came with a four point harness. The first thing we did was take the harnesses out and put them on while we put the stands together to get use to them. We just wore them as much as possible for the next several days till now we barely notice them. I wont go up a tree without it on. I figure I have way more to loose if I dont have it on than I loose by wearing it...

Always wear saftey gear, mine is a saftey belt on the Treelounge, I put on while I'm climbing. The other saftey goodie the the cell phone, which also keeps me in contact all day long with my hunting buddies, texting.

There are 4 things I will not get in my climbing stand without:
Safety Harness
A whistle
Charged cell phone or radio
A knife within reach, maybe in the front pocket on bib overalls
You do not need any of those things until you really need them. If you need them and do not have them, believe me, you are going to wish to God you had them within your reach.

Sorry I didn't see your post. I love my tree lounge. It is mobile, fastens to the tree quickly, solid as a rock and quiet. I sleep in it all the time, you know when you get the nods, well I just kick back nap 10 or 15 and get back to the hunt. Belive me if something crunchs on the leaves you will wake up. I have never left the woods because I was uncomfortable.
The saftey strap is not a harness just a belt but it would keep you from falling the ground. The only thing to get used to is the bow hunter platform you are away from the tree and that kinda feels spooky, but you can draw your bow in any direction with out your elbow hitting the tree, the only place you can't shoot is where the tree is. The Safety strap is easy to adjust so you just lean out against the strap and your stable as a rock.

I use a lineman style climbing /safety belt called a Limb Hopper. Its not a harness but I feel safe in it. I wrap the rope around the tree and hook back to it self and I fell very safe. The rope is adjustable and I adjust it where I can lean out when I shoot my bow.

I use the HSS. I wouldn't climb a tree without it. I use it with lean to stands as well.
