I shoot a savage 270 during modern gun season.  I've thought of trying a new caliber and from the way it sounds a 30-06 wouldn't be a bad idea. However, several of the new 308's have caught my eye.  I've always heard it was a flat shooting gun and that the snipers in the military use them but all the guys around the campfire say its a good gun for the wife.  I've looked at the howa axiom and rem 700 vtr.  It would be mainly for whitetail probobly no further than 250 yards. Also looked at the new Remington R-15.  Any thoughts??

Go afield with a good attitude, with respect for the wildlife you hunt and for the forests and fields in which you walk.  Immerse yourself in the outdoor experience.  It will clense your soul and make you a better person. - Fred Bear

I have a buddy of mine that hunts with a British 308 and he say's they are flat shooting rifle he let's his 9 year old daughter use it during the youth hunt and she scored with a nice 8 pt. this year.I was with the 392 nd.Recon unit and we switch over to the AR 15 rifle that shoots a 7.62 mm round.same thing as a AK-47.It shoots flat and straight.

I think the .308 is an excellent deer gun. I think you mean the R-25. The R-15 is .223. I would love to have either, but I'm a little old fashioned so "black rifles" for deer hunting just aren't me. I am a .30-06 man. If it were me in the market for a deer rifle to use for many many years I'd choose a Browning BAR or X-bolt in .280 or .30-06. They are top of the line so you won't be second guessing your decision over the next year or three, their accuracy is excellent and still a couple hundred dollars cheaper than a "R" gun.
