Just wondering what gun you guys recommend when running dogs.  My grandpa used to run dogs and now my dad has taken on the family tradition.  I figured out pretty quick that my 270 with a scope isn't practical because it's kinda hard to get a running deer in the scope fast enough. I started carring my 12 guage with 3 1/2 in. double ought buck shot and thought that would do but had a nice 8 pt. run into a fire lane and stop broad side about 75 yrds.  I let it fly but just peppered him.  I'm considering shooting a slug this year but wondered if a lever-action 30-30 wouldn't be a better choice.  Also wondering if it's safe to shoot a slug through a shotgun with exchangable chokes.  Everything I've looked up says yes but to use an Improved Cylinder choke.  Any thoughts?

If you're going to be on tight lanes I use a shotgun. If you can get in a stand over a clearing I use a rifle. The real trick is being where they run right over you and shooting quick.

This is a great question, and a hard one to answer specifically. It really will all come down to what you find the most comfortable and effective during your hunts.
I have had fairly decent hunting experiences using a 30-30 when in thick brush and cover. However, I use my .270 with a scope when I have some open shooting lanes, usually when I am up in my deer stand.
Good luck with finding what works best for you!
