Shotgun hunters?

Just wondering if there are any deer hunters using slug guns. I don't myself but i'm might be thinking on buying one so tell me what make/model you have and the pros/cons about them so I know what to buy.

When I move out to Arkansas I plan on switching back and forth between my Remington 30-06 and my 1187 SP Slug Gun it will all depend on where I am hunting. As for the Slug gun all I can say at 100 yards it is a tack driver. When I went out to Wyoming 2 years ago I actually took it and shot a doe at about 175 yards (longest shot I ever took with it) and she walked 5 feet and went down. I would guess it would all depend on the cover your in and your own personal preference

I've never hunted deer with a shotgun, but just for difficulty's sake, I have been tempted to use my .410 with a slug.

I don't hunt anywhere that I can use a rifle. Been slug hunting for 17 years in NE Arkansas around Weiner/Cash. The 870 with slug barrel is VERY accurate with sabots, but the one I have has the old school open iron sights. Not bad when a deer is in the open or walking, but I jumped one of the biggest bucks I've seen on the Cache River on a drive a few years ago and he was maybe 30 yards. I couldn't find him in my sights and fired off 5 slugs while he was running about 80 mph. I have rarely missed a deer slug hunting and I went home, took the barrel off and gave it to my uncle.

Before and after that incident the best gun I've ever used to slug hunt is an old Browning Stalker with a 28" barrel. That thing has put down more deer than I can count. Very accurate, but awful heavy. Get a sling if you are going to be doing any drives or long walking.

Being from southeast virginia we could never use rifles growing up. I have a remington 1100 with a rifled barrel and scope mount with a nikon 2-7 x 40 mounted on it that shoots 1 inch groups at 150 yards with hornadys SST slugs. I love this gun and have killed over 20 deer with it, none of which went more than 10 yards after shot. I shot remington core-lokt slugs for a few years and they were VERY devastating on deer but were VERY expensive ($17 for 5 shells) and out of 5 shells one or two would be a flyer (would not group with the other shots, sometimes not even hitting the entire target). The hornadys are cheaper ($13 for 5) and I have never had a "flyer" but do not do as much damage as the remingtons. The remingtons would leave holes the size of softballs in the deer while the hornadys tend to have a more controlled expansion. Both drop deer in their tracks 99% of the time.

Most of my friends at home hunt with 870s with rifled barrels and scoped and are very accurate. I would recommend an 870 if you are going to buy a whole new gun. You will save money and have a very reliable weapon. I was given my 1100 with a 28" barrel and simply bought the rifled barrel seperate, otherwise I would have bought an 870.

On a final note, if you aren't a fan of recoil, do not buy a slug gun. My gas operated, 2.75" 1100 kicks harder when loaded with slugs than my 870 does with 3.5" turkey loads.

H&R ultra slug..best slug gun ive ever shot shoots 3 inch groups at 100 and 150 yards with remington premier accutip sabot.  live in NE arkansas and thats all we can use is slug guns. so i wanted one that would shoot far, and it does, only downside is its weight.. 8lbs with scope
