Hello! Jason welcome to the forum. When I first started tying about 18 years ago me myself didn't have a fly tying vise so I would use vise grips to hold the hook in place.I made my own bobbin this is what is used to hold your spool of thread,I used a piece of stainless steel wire formed into the shape of a bobbin, and got alot of my materials at hobby lobby and bought a fly tying manual for about 15 dollars and taught myself how to tie flies.I suggest that you buy a fly tiers beginner kit from Bass Pro for about 30 to 50 dollars it comes with everything you need to get started. If you need to know any more info send me an e-mail and I'll be glad to help you out.

i tied three lastnight. I had a pair of needle nosed vise grips in a bench vise. i dont have any bobin or anything yet but i did find a string holder for a cheap kite and it worked pretty good. my flies i did make was made out of brown hemp on one black on another with fuzzed up nylon string. dont know if they will work or not but going to try them out sunday afternoon.. thanks for the info about the bobin im gonna make one now

I see you are heading in the right direction, you can always go to You-Tube and watch some videos on how to tie flies to get more of an insight on the steps of tying a fly from the tail to the eye of the hook, and what materails to use for what kind of fish you are after. good luck on Sunday.

Jason, you should be able to aquire the most basic vice on ebay for $10 or so. And I know you can find a cheap kit there. I wish my extra vice would not have broken or I would send it to you.
YouTube is definitely the best resource for learning how to tie. If you are like me, you can read all the books and look at all the pictures you want, but until you see how somebody's hand is turning and how they are maneuvering, etc. etc., it is hard to learn. I put the book down and went right to YouTube. I will say that there is a great site I use all the time called FlyAnglersOnline.com. He offers step by step instructions and really does a great job not skipping steps with the photos.

Awesome! I know it's great feeling when you tie something of your own and catch fish on them.

That thread will be o.k. to start with, but I would buy some 3/0 thread to start with it is strong enough for the beginner to start out with less breakage where you can really put some hard pulling wraps to the hook shank, this way you can teach yourself how much pressure to put on the thread, then you can move onto a lighter thread like 6/0,or 8/0.Another size thread is 240,140 then 70 being the lightest.
